I’m Umi, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and the heart behind The Connection Corner. I work with children, adolescents, young adults, and families, and my approach is rooted in compassion, curiosity, and the belief that meaningful connection is the foundation of healing.

I strive to create a warm, nonjudgmental space where clients feel safe to show up as they are. Whether we’re exploring big emotions, building coping skills, navigating transitions, or strengthening family relationships, therapy with me is collaborative, supportive, and paced to meet each client’s unique needs. My goal is for you to feel seen, understood, and empowered—both in and outside of the therapy room.

Education & Experience

My journey into this work began at the University of Maryland, College Park, where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. I went on to train at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in the Behavioral Management Clinic, gaining foundational experience in child behavior, emotional regulation, and family support.

I earned my Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Towson University, where I began providing therapy to children and adolescents and discovered my passion for helping young people navigate life’s emotional and developmental complexities.

Before founding The Connection Corner, I worked in private practice supporting children, teens, and families through a wide range of emotional and behavioral concerns. These experiences shaped my commitment to creating a warm, approachable environment where clients feel understood, connected, and supported in meaningful growth.

What It’s Like To Work With Me

Clients often describe my style as calm, validating, and approachable. I balance structure with flexibility, offering practical tools while also making space for reflection and growth. I believe therapy should feel supportive, not intimidating, and that progress happens through trust, consistency, and connection.

I value collaboration with caregivers and other professionals while also honoring a child or teen’s need for autonomy and trust. Together, we work toward meaningful, sustainable change that supports both the individual and the family system.

My Approach

My therapeutic style is warm, collaborative, and deeply person-centered. Healing happens when clients feel genuinely seen and supported, so I tailor every session to the individual needs, strengths, and personality of the child, teen, or young adult sitting with me. I use a blend of evidence-based and creative modalities, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

  • Play therapy techniques and therapeutic games

  • Creative expression through art, drawing, and hands-on activities

  • Walk-and-talk therapy for clients who feel more comfortable processing while moving

  • Mindfulness and coping skills for emotional regulation

  • Elements of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

  • Goal setting, visualization, and stress management for young athletes

Whether we are drawing, playing a game, taking a walk, or exploring thoughts and feelings in a traditional seated session, the work is always centered around connection, empowerment, and finding what resonates most with each client. My practice includes LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent-affirming care, with an emphasis on cultural sensitivity and meeting every client exactly as they are.
